From experience we have seen how phonics can help learners develop strong skills that help them progress smoothly as they become junior high school students. After a period of phonics training, learners have confidence reading and writing. With a firm understanding of pronunciation and spelling patterns, they have stronger speaking and listening skills. It is important that learners become familiar with the sound system of English, especially vowel and consonant sounds that are very different from, or not found in Japanese, before they reach junior high school. This enables them to read and acquire more vocabulary at junior high school and improve confidently. Self-study becomes much easier with a foundation in phonics, and students are much less dependent on teachers or rote learning. They can independently understand how words are pronounced, as well as meaning, and this encourages them to learn more and enjoy learning. With a foundation in phonics, the barriers that block many Japanese learners disappear. Phonics learning can begin at any time in elementary school with materials adapted for the students’ age. Starting earlier gives learners more time to become familiar and comfortable with English pronunciation patterns, and develop basic reading skills.
From an early stage, with a comprehensive, well-balanced education, learners of English can easily develop reading and writing skills
Rather than memorising, or rote learning, our school helps students to understand English, in English.
Due to our small classes, every child has the opportunity to develop communication skills and our Junior High School students have all gone on to receive top grades in English at school. Learning a language without learning how it sounds or is pronounced is very difficult. To enable future studies, students should start gaining skills early in pronunciation, speaking, listening, reading, writing, and dictation, as well as grammar.
